Halloween in the Time of COVID
In the latest of 2020 gut-punches, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) has now recommended no door-to-door trick-or-treating due to the novel Coronavirus. This recommendation comes out in an attempt to keep everyone safe in a year struck by a global pandemic, but it doesn’t have to mean there will be no spooky fun on Halloween. We scoured the internet for Halloween activities that meet the guidelines while giving you and your family a chance to gather some treats…and maybe a few tricks!
- Outdoor Pumpkin Carving Contest. The goal here is to have some fun while maintaining distance. Pick a location in your neighborhood, have neighbors bring a folding table and designate each family to their own station… Set a time limit and let the fun begin! When the carving is finished, the preselected judges can make their way around to determine the winner. Prizes can be anything you choose, but how great would it be to make this a yearly tradition? “Geller Cup” anyone? (Please tell us you got that “Friends” reference…)
- Candy Scavenger Hunt. Scavenger hunts have long been traditions for many families for many reasons. Why not add Halloween to the list? Create clues for your participants to follow that will lead them to pieces of candy along the way. If you are keeping this to just your family, indoor and outdoor locations are fair game but if this will be a larger gathering make sure to stay outdoors and maintain social distance guidelines. Fun Halloween themed masks help too!
- Halloween Costume Parade. One of the best parts of Halloween is the costumes! If your neighborhood uses the app “Nextdoor” you can coordinate times for each section of the neighborhood to walk a designated route while the others look on. This way everyone can see all the fun costumes in one spot!
- One-way Trick-or-Treating. This idea takes a little preparation, but once it is ready it will run itself! Create trick-or-treat goodie bags to be left on a table or at the end of your driveway; each visitor can take one and be on their way without needing to ring the doorbell or riffle through an entire bowl of candy.
You don’t need us to tell you that Halloween will look a little different this year, but we hope you can find some ways to still have fun and indulge in some tricks and treats! Speaking of treats, the interest rates are so low right now they seem like a trick (see what we did there?!?).
