At-Home Office Must-Haves
In March and April chances are we were winging this whole working from home thing… After all it was only temporary, or so we thought. But, it’s nearly October and many of us are still living this same song and dance. If you find yourself setting up shop to work from your kitchen table, check out a handful of things we think you definitely cannot live without during this extended period of working from home.
First and foremost, (assuming you already have a computer with a webcam) you need a desk. Whether that is an oversized desk, a corner desk, a stand-up desk or just your average office desk… You need one. Find a desk that makes you feel focused and productive. You should really love it, if you haven’t noticed you’ll be spending a lot of time here.
The second essential is a comfortable desk chair. Find a swiveling, ergonomic desk chair that allows you to make adjustments to tailor your chair to fit you just right. You’ll want to be able to adjust the seat height, armrests and backrest. Make sure the chair’s seat has enough width and depth to support you and is made of a quality, cushioned material. Again, you’ll be spending a lot of time here.
There are a few more things we deem essential. The first, a daily planner or notepad. Keep your thoughts at bay and map out your day by writing down your tasks to complete. This will help to keep you on task and focused on the bigger picture. The second essential is a surge protector. With all those electronics and their cords, don’t opt for the risky simple extension cord… Get the surge protector and put your mind at ease.
These are the third and fourth essential accessories: noise cancelling headphones and blue light glasses. Chances are, at some point you will need to fully hone in on your work and block out anything else. Noise cancelling headphones will be your best friend, especially if you’re not living alone. While you block out the noise, be sure to block out that blue light emulating from your computer screen you’ve been gazing into so often too. Blue light glasses are cost-effective and will save you the headache (literally) that too much screen time can attribute to.
The remainder of this list is what we consider to be the fun stuff… Things you might not absolutely need, but should definitely get. Feeling lonely? Get a plant-pal to accompany you at your desk. This will bring a pop of color, filter the air and lower your stress levels. Easily distracted by your phone? Avoid getting sucked in when you innocently light up your screen to check the time; get a clock that you can easily glance at. Good lighting will go a long way, we recommend investing in a few lamps, both desk and floor. Make sure the lighting is not too harsh, and illuminates the room effectively. Lastly, fuel up. Catch that coffee buzz with a close-by coffee maker. We love simple solutions like a Keurig or Nespresso, but the OG drip coffee maker serves its purpose too.
