A Guide to Good Guest Behavior for the Holidays
If you are headed over the hill and through the woods this holiday season, read our tips below for advice on being a good guest this holiday season.
- Open House Etiquette. Being prepared for the particular event you are attending is key. Dress code? Kids allowed? Making sure you know the answers to these questions is key to your enjoyment. When it comes to host gifts, stick with something the host can use long past the party. Think of low-maintenance potted plants or a holiday themed decoration.
- Office Party Etiquette. Do your research prior to the event to learn which top employees will be present so that you can prepare some conversation topics to discuss when you see them. One caveat, avoid the topics of religion and politics. As far as dress code, upgrade your daily look, but make sure to stay professional. A good rule of thumb is too go one step above what you would wear on a normal work day. If you usually wear a shirt and tie, add a suit jacket. If you wear pants and a shirt consider going to a skirt and top.
- In-laws Etiquette. Again, preparation is key. Make sure you know the agenda of the visit and if you will be attending any locations that require certain dress. Make sure you are bringing along a gift that shows you put some thought into it. Gift cards to their favorite stores or a gourmet cake or candy can do the trick. After the event, be sure to follow-up with a thank you note and let them know you appreciated being invited to their event.
- Family Etiquette. While you may be very comfortable with your family and the location of the event, it doesn’t mean you can push off proper etiquette. There may be new attendees that you will meet for the first time and, as the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Also, even though this may be a regular visit for you, make sure to bring a host gift. Think of your family traditions and try to find a gift that adds to the story.
